Can Lance win another main event? Even against a known “Maniac”? What happens when Kevin encounters the menacing Butcher? And what in the blue hell is up with Zulu this week?
Sorry, Livia.
Opening montage.
Match 1: Zulu versus the Grappler
Highlights:
Zulu blasted Grappler before the bell with a double axe handle and clotheslined him.
When he headbutted Grappler, Zulu tossed him over the top rope onto ring announcer Marc Lowrance’s table.
Referee Ralph Pulley called for the bell to disqualify Zulu.
As a result, Grappler won by DQ at 0:57.
Rating: DUD
Summary: Too short, but did you really want to see an elongated Zulu match?
After the match, Zulu grabs the microphone, doesn’t care about what just transpired, and demands a match against Abdullah. He wants BLOOD! He takes too much time, so Mercer leaves the broadcast booth to interview him at ringside.
Zulu reiterates his disdain for Abdullah until Gary Hart interrupts him. Hart points at Abdullah in the ring, but Zulu manhandles him. Hart goes too far; hence, Zulu makes him HIT THE POLE and jumps into the ring to confront Abdullah.
Match 2: Zulu versus Abdullah the Butcher (w/ Gary Hart)
Highlights:
The bell never sounded, but Zulu destroyed Abdullah with a series of headbutts.
As he gave Abdullah a cross corner whip, Zulu applied a bear hug.
Zulu took Abdulah down with it, but Hart entered the ring and eliminated Pulley.
When he wrapped a clothes hanger around Zulu’s neck, Hart choked him.
I wonder if this was Abdullah’s invitation to eat some ribs and hang out.
Nevertheless, Abdullah recovered and choked Zulu.
In the meantime, the Dallas faithful chanted “Bruis-er” while Bronko Lubich arrived.
David Manning also approached ringside although Hart pulled Abdullah off Zulu.
Not surprisingly, Hart struggled to remove Abdullah from ringside.
Rating: NONE
Summary: Giving Zulu a reason to wrestle is better than the alternative.
Match 3: Bruiser Brody versus Perry Jackson
Highlights:
Brody slammed Jackson before feeding him a big boot.
When the match segued to the floor, Brody rammed Jackson face-first into Lowrance’s table.
Mercer plugged the Cotton Bowl show on 10/12, and Brody hammered Jackson with a steel chair.
As they returned to the ring, Brody tied Jackson up in the ropes and dealt him a pair of boots to the face.
Another big boot from Brody put Jackson down for the pin at 3:22.
Rating: *
Summary: Showcase match for Brody.
Match 4: Kevin Von Erich versus Abdullah the Butcher (w/ Gary Hart)
Highlights:
This match occurred on 7/25 but, shockingly, was not joined in progress.
According to Lowrance, per the World Wrestling Council and the WCWA, Abdullah would be searched prior to each match. Doesn’t that violate the 4th Amendment?
Unfathomably, Hazzard located a fountain pen on Abdullah and berated Hart for it.
As Kevin pounded on him, Abdullah caught him with a kick to the midsection.
Kevin rammed him face-first into the top turnbuckle, but it didn’t faze Abdullah.
Instead, Abdullah returned fire with a head butt.
Kevin mounted the top turnbuckle and unloaded a flying elbow smash much to Hart’s chagrin.
When Kevin mounted the adjacent top turnbuckle, he launched a missile dropkick. Sweet!
He attempted an Iron claw, but Abdullah blocked it.
With the Dallas faithful firmly in his favor, Kevin demolished Hart who had jumped onto the apron.
That allowed Abdullah to take Kevin up the aisle and through the exterior door.
After Kevin returned, he won a battle over a chair and jammed it into Abdullah’s rather large midsection.
He nailed Abdullah with it again, but Abdullah rammed him face-first into Lowrance’s table. All this table work on this show had to be related to all the tabling of instant replay in the NFL.
While Abdullah blocked another shot with the chair, Kevin rammed him face-first into the apron.
Abdullah absorbed it and head-butted Kevin again.
Oddly, the match segued to the balcony. Did Abdullah need a mid-match snack?
Kevin stormed back to the ring, grabbed the microphone, and demanded “more Butcher.” Ah, the concession stand’s out of brisket. Abdullah was HUNGRY!
Vehemently, he instructed Hart to bring him back, so he’ll “kill him.” Watch out, Kev. Dallas’ finest might take that literally.
Referee Rick Hazzard called for the bell and ruled the match a no contest at 6:24.
Rating: **
Summary: Unless you prefer a brawl, Kevin’s athleticism helped him to battle the Sudanese behemoth; yet there was no winner.
Match 5: Lance Von Erich versus “Maniac” Matt Borne
Highlights:
Lance gorilla-pressed Borne and slammed him.
When he dropkicked Borne, Lance worked on the arm.
The Dallas faithful chanted “we want the claw,” and Lance reversed an Irish whip before decking Borne.
As Lance attempted a ten-punch count-along, Borne countered with an inverted atomic drop.
He landed an elbow drop and guillotined Lance with the top rope.
After Lance gave Borne a cross corner whip, he ate boot on his follow-through.
Borne scored with another elbow drop but couldn’t earn a count due to Lance’s position under the bottom rope.
While the Dallas faithful chanted “go, Lance, go,” their hero countered a rear chin lock with a guillotine across the top rope.
Borne got tied up in the ropes, so Lance dealt him a kick to the midsection.
Clotheslining Borne, Lance slammed him.
He mounted the top turnbuckle, attempted a flying splash, but ate knees.
Suplexing Lance, Borne mounted the top turnbuckle and launched a senton splash.
He refused the pin and devastated Lance with a left.
Hooking a somersault rollup, Borne lost the legs. Oops.
Lance bridged out and trapped Borne in a backslide.
1-2-3.
Lance won at 15:39.
Rating: ***
Summary: Despite the elongated rest holds, both Lance and Borne maintained the Dallas faithful’s attention, and Lance squeaked out a victory due to Borne’s overconfidence.
Conclusion: Action-packed episode topped off with a Lance victory over Borne. If you questioned how tough Kevin is, his match against Abdullah should provide sufficient evidence.
Also, Brody won, and Zulu confronted Abdullah--that will lead to some forthcoming revenge matches.
Next week, Kevin and Lance square off against Borne and “Mad Dog” Buzz Sawyer. That should be extremely good.
