Tag team champions collide as the World champs scrap with the Texas champs. Also, Rogers and Tony battle where the loser will be forced to ride a wild bull in Mesquite. What’s going on in the heel dressing room? What happened to the Spoiler? Borne family? Pringle? All this and more in this action-packed episode!
Opening montage.
Per Lowrance, in Ft. Worth, Arcidi and the Spoiler were set for a tug-o’-war, but it never transpired. Arcidi along with more of Percy Pringle’s charges tied up Spoiler before pummeling him beyond recognition. Also, Pringle wasn’t done as his men put “Tough” Tony Borne on the shelf as well. That’s quite a bit of gang activity!
Match 1: Bruiser Brody versus Perry Jackson
Highlights:
- Look, folks! It’s Brody’s favorite enhancement talent!
- Before ring announcer Joe Rinelli could offer us the official particulars, Jackson ambushed Brody.
- He gave Brody a cross corner whip but ate boot on his follow-through.
- When Brody fed him a big boot, he slammed Jackson.
- Speaking of Jackson, he took the match to the floor which was a clear mistake.
- Brody took control by making Jackson HIT THE POLE.
- As Brody whacked him with a wooden chair, he ripped Jackson’s t-shirt off.
- Back in the ring, Brody tied Jackson up in the ropes and booted him twice.
- He slammed Jackson and landed a flying leg drop, brother.
- 1-2-3.
- Brody won at 2:27.
Rating: *
Summary: Showcase match for Brody.
Match 2: The Dirty White Boys & Ted Arcidi (w/ Percy Pringle) versus the Rock’n’Roll RPMs & “Maniac” Matt Borne
Highlights:
- Borne stormed the ring and attacked Arcidi for the attack upon his father.
- As Davis tagged in, he ate a back elbow from Denton but kicked out before 1.
- Denton mounted the top turnbuckle, leaped, but the RPMs caught him with a double shot to the midsection. Since Denton’s midsection was rather plump, I’d suspect he’d be no stranger to double shots.
- When they dealt Denton another double shot to the belly, the RPMs flattened him with a double knee lift.
- Tags were exchanged on both sides, and Arcidi gave Borne a cross corner whip.
- After Borne countered a back elbow with a kick, Davis tagged in and dropkicked Arcidi.
- Tags were exchanged again on both sides, and Brooks clotheslined Lane.
- While Arcidi tagged in, he reversed a cross corner whip but came up empty on his follow-through.
- Arcidi reversed an Irish whip, clotheslined Lane, and followed with a slam.
- Landing an elbow drop, Arcidi tagged out to Denton who fed Lane his own back elbow for 1.
- He suplexed Lane for 2.
- Spiraling Lane with a swinging neckbreaker, Denton got another 2.
- Brooks tagged in, and the Dirty White Boys plastered Lane with a double back elbow.
- Kicking out before 3, Lane rebounded with a sunset flip for 2.
- Denton tagged in and delivered an atomic drop to Lane for 2.
- Countering a back drop with a punt, Lane made the HOT TAG.
- Davis dropkicked Denton and hooked an inside cradle for 2.
- With all six wrestlers in the ring, the RPMs double-clotheslined Denton.
- Pringle mounted the top turnbuckle, but Borne slammed him down to the mat.
- In celebration, the Dallas faithful went APESHIT!
- Borne covered Pringle, and referee Ralph Pulley counted him down at 6:43.
Rating: ***
Summary: Solid teamwork by the now babyface RPMs, and the heat was ON between the irate Borne and Arcidi. I am not being hyperbolic when I say the Dallas faithful LOSES ITS DAMN MIND anytime Pringle gets some comeuppance.
After the match, referee Bronko Lubich advises Rinelli to send all security to the dressing room STAT. Following the commercial break, Kevin Von Erich and Steve Simpson try to break into the heels’ dressing room but a security guard ushers them away from the door. What happened here?
Match 3: Cowboy Tony versus Tommy Rogers (w/ Bobby Fulton)
Highlights:
- Special stipulation: the loser must ride a wild bull when WCCW returns to Mesquite.
- Rogers fed Tony a flying headscissors while Lowrance hyped an upcoming show in Birmingham, AL. Not sure if that actually transpired.
- As Tony blocked a hip toss, he dealt Rogers one of his own.
- Missing from this week’s episode was FRITZ’S SCRAPBOOK. Methinks the WWE Network doesn’t believe any of Fritz’s bullshit.
- When he landed a knee drop, Tony missed an elbow drop.
- Rogers delivered a belly-to-back suplex, and Tony came up empty on a charge to the corner.
- After Rogers mounted the second turnbuckle, he scored with a flying fist.
- He dropkicked Tony and got 1.
- While Tony nailed Rogers in the throat unbeknownst to referee Ralph Pulley, he tried to use his whip in the corner.
- Fortunately for Rogers, Fulton thwarted Tony’s efforts by grabbing the whip.
- Rogers hooked a backslide and pinned Tony at 4:21.
- Tony MUST ride a wild bull in Mesquite!
Rating: **
Summary: Tony’s encounter with the beloved Rogers only made it easier for the Dallas faithful to root against him. Since Rogers won, the Dallas faithful came UNGLUED.
Following the match, Rogers grabs the microphone and hopes that Tony “can ride a bull better than you can use that whip.” HA!
WORLD CLASS ANNOUNCER PROFILE: Featured is a spotlight on Lowrance who began working for WCCW in 1980 as a ring announcer. Due to the growth of WCCW, Lowrance’s role expanded. While involved in the weekly wrestling shows, Lowrance helped to grow a local Jeep dealership. He also spent time at Texas Christian University (TCU) and covered the Texas Rangers. Solid segment!
According to Lowrance, the World tag team champions injured referee Rick Hazzard. What really happened was Hazzard, Kevin, and Scott Hall were urinating on the side of the building while drinking in Japan but got noticed by the Yakuza. Subsequently, the Yakuza physically assaulted Hazzard as payment for his disrespect. When Hazzard returned to Dallas, Fritz read him the riot act for not protecting Kevin. Hazzard suffered numerous facial injuries from the attack and his return to WCCW could be in doubt. Nowadays, Rick Branch settled down with his family in Anniston, AL.
Match 4 (non-title): WCCW World tag team champions “Flamboyant” Eric Embry & the “Thumper” Frankie Lancaster versus WCCW Texas tag team champions Tony Atlas & Sweet Brown Sugar
Highlights:
- Embry tagged in, but SBS leapfrogged him twice and fed him a dropkick.
- As Embry gave him a cross corner whip, SBS floated over, leaped to the opposite second turnbuckle, and planted him with a flying forearm.
- SBS leaped to the opposite second turnbuckle again, but Embry delivered a shot to the midsection.
- When Embry dealt SBS a knee lift, he mounted the second turnbuckle but missed a diving headbutt.
- Atlas tagged in and gorilla-press-slammed Embry.
- After Lancaster tagged in, he promptly lost a bodybuilding exhibition to Atlas.
- Atlas blocked a slam and gorilla-press-slammed Lancaster.
- While SBS tagged in, he mounted the top turnbuckle and lowered the boom onto Lancaster.
- Lancaster caught him mid-leapfrog and decimated SBS with an inverted atomic drop.
- Getting catapulted face-first into the top turnbuckle by Lancaster, SBS got rammed into the second turnbuckle by Embry behind referee Bronko Lubich’s back. SNEAKY!
- Embry tagged in and suplexed SBS and got 2.
- Hooking a gutwrench suplex, he got another 2.
- He lassoed SBS with a lariat but couldn’t get 3.
- Tagging in, Lancaster devastated SBS with a belly-to-back suplex for yet another 2.
- He dropkicked SBS but only got 2 thanks to a foot on the bottom rope.
- Although Embry tagged in, he got punted.
- Hot tag Atlas.
- He headbutted Lancaster twice, mounted the second turnbuckle, but got stymied by Embry. How dastardly!
- Holy head-on collisions, Batman! A mid-ring collision put both wrestlers down on the mat.
- Embry baited SBS into the ring prompting Lubich to contain him. Meanwhile, Atlas covered Lancaster.
- Without any supervision, Embry mounted the top turnbuckle and hammered Atlas with a double axe handle. Evil!
- Lubich, upon seeing Embry in the ring, ushered him back to his corner.
- Swiftly, SBS flipped Atlas atop Lancaster before he could get caught.
- 1-2-3.
- Atlas and SBS won at 9:14.
Rating: ***
Summary: A second well-worked tag match with different nuances to separate it from its counterpart. Unlike last week, Atlas looked motivated while SBS did a ton of cardio work getting the brunt of the punishment from the World champs.
Afterward, the Texas tag champs share a celebratory high-five.
Conclusion: Do you like exciting tag matches? This is the show for you! Two entertaining tag matches make this a worthwhile episode. In addition, Rogers defeated Tony forcing the latter to ride a wild bull. I’m sure it’s even more difficult than this.
Next week, Shaun Simpson makes his WCCW debut, the Spoiler/Arcidi debacle, plus the fallout from Simpson/Von Erich heel dressing room situation!
