Taped from Dallas, TX

Airdate: July 11, 1987 (taped 06/26)

Attendance: unknown

Hosted by Marc Lowrance & the “Modern Day Warrior” Kerry Von Erich

Can SBS capture the Texas title from Perez? Who wins the Texas tag team title tournament? Will Simpson and Casey upend Embry and Tony? And who makes his rather undignified debut tonight? Climb aboard and enjoy some Texas ‘rasslin’!

In the cold open, Lowrance runs down tonight’s card and throws it to Hart. Although Brody will face a rather unique opponent tonight, Hart promises a “tougher” clash against Abdullah the Butcher in the near future.

Brody joins Lowrance at ringside and cuts a promo on Hart and Butcher.

Opening montage.

Match 1: The Rock’n’Roll RPMs (w/ Percy Pringle) versus “Maniac” Matt Borne & the Spoiler

Highlights:

  • For those unaware, Spoiler was born in a rather infamous part of Canada—Moncton.
  • Spoiler mounted the top rope, performed a rope walk, and fed Lane a flying shoulder block.
  • When Spoiler slammed Lane, Borne tagged in and dealt Lane a German suplex with a bridge for 1.
  • Al Madril joined the broadcast table, and Davis tagged in.
  • As the Dallas faithful chided Pringle, Borne reversed a cross corner whip.
  • Lane, having gotten nailed by Borne, tagged in but got suplexed.
  • After Borne escaped a slam attempt, he hooked an O’Connor roll.
  • Davis’ illegal appearance in the ring baited Spoiler into the ring.
  • Consequently, referee Rick Hazzard returned him to the babyface corner.
  • Davis illegally switched with Lane and pounded Borne. SNEAKY!
  • While Lane legally tagged in, all four wrestlers were in the ring.
  • Borne reversed a cross corner whip sending Lane precariously into a cane shot by Pringle. Oops.
  • 1-2-3.
  • Borne and Spoiler won at 4:28.

Rating: ***

Summary: Despite Spoiler being more of a placeholder in the match, his ropewalk resembles a move from a future superstar’s repertoire. Since his feud with Pringle rages on, Borne wrestles much of the match and wins due to heel miscommunication.

After the match, Davis wants to get his hands on Pringle, but Lane keeps him at bay.

Match 2: Bruiser Brody versus Texas Red (w/ Percy Pringle)

Highlights:

  • You may not recognize Red as either “Mean” or a “Deadman” because he’s wearing a mask. This match marks his pro wrestling debut, and he’s in the ring with Brody.
  • Interestingly, Red bore ZERO tattoos at this point in his life and look who his manager was.
  • Brody fed him a big boot, but Red was out of position and took it WAY DOWNTOWN.
  • As the match segued to the floor, Brody welcomed the newcomer to pro wrestling by ramming him into ring announcer Chris Kerson’s table.
  • Kerson was NOT the same person as the True Detective character Nails.
  • Nevertheless, Brody continued the welcome aboard party for Red with a chair shot to the back.
  • Brody tossed Red back into the ring, tied him up in the ropes, and planted him with a pair of big boots.
  • After Brody demolished him with another big boot, he pinned Red at 2:29.
  • Methinks this Red guy might be pushing up daises after this one.

Rating: *

Summary: Showcase match for Brody who buried his opponent much to the delight of the Dallas faithful.

KERRY’S KORNER: Kerry introduces the following match from the WCWA Texas tag team title tournament and provided commentary.

Match 3 (final for the vacant Texas tag team titles): Tony Atlas & Sweet Brown Sugar versus Ted Arcidi & Texas Red (w/ Percy Pringle)

Highlights:

  • This match occurred in Fort Worth on 6/29.
  • When Arcidi dealt Atlas a back elbow, he landed an elbow drop for 2.
  • We fast-forward to SBS’ participation, and he attempted a sunset flip.
  • As Arcidi fed SBS a knuckle sandwich, Atlas tagged in.
  • We fast-forward again, and Arcidi escaped committing first-degree murder with malice by missing a chair shot.
  • After the chair bounced off the top turnbuckle, it WHACKED Arcidi directly in the face.
  • Atlas delivered a diving head butt and pinned Arcidi.
  • As a result, Atlas and Young won at 1:00 shown.
  • WE HAVE NEW CHAMPIONS!

Rating: NONE

Summary: Too little footage shown to rate, but congratulations to Atlas and Young.

Following the match, Kerry presents the new champions with their belts. SBS offers his thanks to God and the Fort Worth faithful.

FRITZ’S SCRAPBOOK: Seated in the bleachers of the Sportatorum, Fritz reads a letter from Jodie Alexander in Tulsa, OK. Alexander inquires about the different World champions among other promotions, and Fritz reminds us that he once was president of the NWA.

During his term, he ardently protested the disqualification rule favoring the champion. Hence, he touts the WCWA for its permanent waiver of the disqualification rule. Along the row in front of him lie the World and World tag team title belts. In essence, Fritz uses prevarication toward the fan’s question.

Match 4: “Flamboyant” Eric Embry & Cowboy Tony versus Steve Simpson & Steve Casey

Highlights:

  • Since each babyface has a brother in pro wrestling, I will use their last names to identify them during this match. You may recall in previous reflections that I use their first names.
  • Simpson blocked a hip toss and fed Tony one of his own.
  • As he leapfrogged Tony, Simpson dropkicked him.
  • Tags were exchanged on both sides, and Casey hip-tossed Embry.
  • When tags were exchanged on both sides again, SBS cut an inset promo for his upcoming title match.
  • Embry tagged in, got reversed on a cross corner whip, and ate a monkey flip from Simpson.
  • After Simpson dropkicked Embry, Casey tagged in but fell victim to a lariat.
  • Tony tagged in and bulldogged Casey.
  • 1-2-3.
  • Tony and Embry won at 5:03.

Rating: *

Summary: With Casey involved, I had a hunch that he’d eat the pin and was correct.

Afterward, Embry tosses Casey to the floor, and the heels double-team Simpson. How dastardly! The heels hoist him atop the top turnbuckle to attempt a second-rope piledriver, but 17-year-old Shaun Simpson rescues his brother from certain early retirement.

Match 5 for the WCWA Texas title: Al Perez (champion w/ Gary Hart) versus Sweet Brown Sugar

Highlights:

  • Kerry joined the broadcast table for the main event.
  • When SBS leapfrogged him, Perez attempted a backslide.
  • SBS flipped out of it and hooked an inside cradle for 2.
  • As he mounted the second turnbuckle, SBS scored with a cross body block for another 2.
  • He secured a sunset flip but couldn’t get 3.
  • After Perez rebounded with a knee drop, he got 2.
  • SBS blocked a hip toss and fed Perez one of his own.
  • While SBS missed a somersault leg drop, he swept the legs and got 2.
  • Perez locked a bear hug, switched to a backbreaker, and got 2.
  • Landing a pair of knee drops, Perez got another 2.
  • SBS came alive with an enziguri, headbutted Perez, and followed with a dropkick.
  • Attempting a second dropkick, SBS inadvertently nailed referee Rick Hazzard as Perez evaded him.
  • Hazzard fell between the ropes to the floor and was OUT COLD.
  • Getting tossed over the top rope, SBS skinned the cat back into the ring, headbutted Perez, LOST HIS DAMN MIND, and sent him flying over the top rope to the floor next to Hazzard.
  • Due to Hazzard’s incapacity, SBS was unable to win the title via countout here.
  • Bronko Lubich approached the ring, and a familiar smell reared its ugly head.
  • With Perez on the apron, SBS suplexed him back into the ring.
  • 1-2-3.
  • SBS won at 8:32.
  • WE HAVE A NEW CHAMPION!

Rating: **½

Summary: A lack of chemistry between them forced a slew of strategic chin locks. Hopefully, a rematch could occur.

After the match, an injured Hazzard returns to the ring to discuss matters with Lubich. An irate Hart strongly politicks a DQ against SBS and gets his wish as Hazzard reverses the decision. Therefore, Perez retains. Perez celebrates on the floor, yet SBS can’t believe it.

Conclusion:  Can you smell the controversy? Yep, it’s the old Dusty finish allowing Perez to keep the title. Seemingly, it appears that SBS has replaced Lance Von Erich due to the latter’s firing.

Nonetheless, SBS and Atlas captured the Texas tag team titles while we witnessed another instance of Shaun Simpson’s involvement in support of his brother. Also, Borne got the better of his arch-nemesis Pringle while Brody could have zipped up a body bag for his opponent following his victory.

Next week, Kevin versus Adias!
