Opening montage.

Match 1: Scott Casey versus “Killer” Tim Brooks

Highlights:

  • They traded slams before Casey gave Brooks a cross corner whip.
  • When he ate boot on his follow-through, Casey fed Brooks an atomic drop.
  • Casey escaped a slam attempt and hooked an O’Connor roll.
  • 1-2-3.
  • Casey won at 5:14.

Summary: Showcase match for Casey.

Match 2: Roberto Soto versus the Grappler

Highlights:

  • For those unaware, Soto was better known as Invader II in Puerto Rico.
  • According to Mercer, the Sportatorium celebrated its 50th birthday.
  • Soto leapfrogged Grappler and followed with a dropkick.
  • As Soto monkey-flipped him, he dealt Grappler another dropkick.
  • Grappler got caught in the ropes, and Soto ruined his weekend.
  • When Grappler escaped, he clotheslined Soto for 1.
  • He slammed Soto and followed with an elbow smash for 2.
  • After he rammed Soto face-first into the mat, Grappler got another 1-count.
  • He slammed Soto but missed a diving head butt.
  • While Soto backdropped Grappler, he delivered a pair of flying headscissors.
  • 1-2-3.
  • Soto won at 7:18.

 

Rating: *

Summary: Showcase match for Soto. That’s two weeks in a row that Grappler’s been defeated with a transitional move.

At ringside, Mercer interviews Dingo Warrior who loves all the young Dingo Warrior fans. He turns his attention to his tag team with Lance and is ready to regain the World tag team titles. Get ready for “Warrior Wildness.” Next, Tony Atlas cuts a meandering promo on Abdullah the Butcher. Bartender, I’ll have what he’s having.

Match 3: Bob “The Cat” Bradley versus Manuel Villalobos

Highlights:

  • For those unaware, Bradley spent most of his career in the WWF prior to his arrival in WCWA. Meanwhile, Villalobos began his career in 1984 in San Antonio.
  • Bradley fed Villalobos a back elbow and followed with a diving head butt.
  • When he rammed Villalobos’ head into the mat, Bradley dealt him a gutwrench suplex.
  • Bradley sent him between the ropes to the blue floor, but Villalobos caught, dragged, and rammed Bradley’s left leg into the ring post.
  • As Villalobos concentrated on the leg, Bradley responded with a shot down near South Padre Island.
  • Bradley delivered a shoulder breaker and followed with another diving head butt.
  • After he gave Villalobos a cross corner whip, Bradley ate knee on his follow-through.
  • Villalobos scored with a flying back elbow, but Bradley thwarted a back drop attempt with a punt.
  • While Bradley leapfrogged him twice, he chopped and slammed Villalobos.
  • He mounted the top turnbuckle and launched a flying splash.
  • 1-2-3.
  • Bradley won at 4:52.

 

Rating: **

Summary: Showcase match for Bradley, but Villalobos did well for himself.

Match 4: Lance Von Erich versus Brian Adias

Highlights:

  • Due to licensed music removal, this match was joined in progress.
  • On cue, Lance heeded my words from last week and donned tights and boots. Hopefully, he gained new moves as well.
  • Adias leapfrogged him, but Lance responded with a dropkick.
  • As Mercer described that Mike was in Japan, allow me to detail his matches:

 

  1. On January 2, he defeated Kantaro Hoshino.
  2. On January 3, Mike lost to Shiro Koshinaka.
  3. On January 4, he defeated Kim Su Hong.
  4. On January 6, he and Tony St. Clair lost to Osamu Kido & Yoshiaki Fujiwara.
  5. On January 7, he teamed with Konga the Barbarian & Black Bart while losing to Antonio Inoki, Shiro Koshinaka, & Tatsumi Fujinami by DQ.
  6. On January 9, he beat Shunji Kosugi.
  7. On January 10, he teamed with El Canek to defeat Kantaro Hoshino & Keiji Muto.
  8. On January 12, he defeated Kim Su Hong.
  9. On January 13, he teamed with Cuban Assassin to beat Kim Su Hong & Shiro Koshinaka.
  10. On January 15, he teamed with Brett Sawyer but lost to Nobuhiko Takada & Shiro Koshinaka by DQ.

 

  • Nevertheless, Adias fed Lance a back elbow and landed a knee drop.
  • He sent Lance down to the blue floor and trapped the knee in the ropes.
  • When he applied a stepover toe hold, Adias barred the leg, grabbed the tights, and got 2.
  • Adias hooked a figure-four leg lock, but Lance turned it over.
  • After Adias escaped, he slammed Lance, mounted the second turnbuckle, but missed.
  • Lance backdropped Adias and followed with a knee to the midsection.
  • While Adias leveraged Lance over the top rope, referee Bronko Lubich called for the bell.
  • Lance won by DQ at 7:15 shown.

 

Rating: **

Summary: Bullshit finish to a match that should have brought the house down.

After the match, Adias tries to decapitate Lance with a chair but nails the ring post instead. Whew! They return to the ring and brawl like they’re fighting over the homecoming queen. As Al Madril enters the fray, the tag champs double-team Lance until Warrior chases them away. The Dallas faithful erupts in glee over their hero.

Match 5: Steve Simpson & Jeff Raitz versus “Maniac” Matt Borne & Master Gee (w/ Percy Pringle)

Highlights:

  • Once again, due to licensed music removal, this match was joined in progress.
  • For those unaware, Raitz performed some enhancement work in the UWF prior to arriving in WCWA.
  • Thanks, Barry.
  • Borne gave Simpson a cross corner whip followed by a boot to the midsection.
  • When Simpson blocked a hip toss, he fed Borne one of his own.
  • He dropkicked Borne and followed with a back drop.
  • As Raitz tagged in, Borne hip-tossed him.
  • Gee tagged in and dealt Raitz some noogies.
  • After Gee rammed Raitz face-first into the mat, Borne tagged in but got slammed.
  • Borne delivered a belly-to-belly suplex and got 2.
  • While Gee tagged in, he tossed Raitz atop Lowrance’s table.
  • Gee distracted referee Rick Hazzard enabling Pringle to wallop Raitz with his cane. SNEAKY!
  • Although Raitz was brought back in the hard way, he landed on his feet and dropkicked Gee twice.
  • Borne tagged in but got slammed twice.
  • Rejoining the match, Simpson mounted the second turnbuckle and lowered the boom onto Borne.
  • Tags were exchanged on both sides, and Gee countered a side head lock with a belly-to-back suplex.
  • Scoring with a flying shoulder block, Gee tagged in Borne.
  • Mounting the top turnbuckle, Borne landed a flying knee drop to Raitz.
  • 1-2-3.
  • Borne and Gee won at 5:52 shown.

 

Rating: **

Summary: With Raitz in the match, the finish was telegraphed a mile away.

Conclusion:  We have conquerors in a Cat, Maniac, Master, Soto, Lance, and Casey. With all the new blood, good matchups are on the horizon. What else can we anticipate?

Next week, Atlas, Simpson, & Lance battle Borne, Gee, & Grappler. Hopefully, it won’t be scary.
