Taped from Shreveport, LA
Airdate: February 13, 1982 (taped)
Attendance: unknown
Hosted by Boyd Pierce & General Skandor Akbar
Can JYD retain the Louisiana title, or will Roop find means to regain it? How will DiBiase and Olympia fare against Orton and Wiskowski? Will Blair defeat Orndorff?
Opening montage.
We revisit last week when Ernie Ladd complained about things until “Cowboy” Bill Watts pointed out that Akbar overtook ownership of the Samoans’ contracts. Ladd interrupted the introductions, but Akbar put him in his place. The Samoans destroyed Ladd putting him on the shelf thanks in LARGE part to Crusher Broomfield.
When we return, Akbar refuses to name the identity of Broomfield.
Next, we see the tag title match from last week when JYD blocked a fireball from Akbar with a steel chair. Speaking of the chair, Afa punished Mike George with a Samoan drop atop it and pinned him for the titles. According to Pierce, you can add George to the injured list alongside Ladd.
Match 1 (non-title): NWA Mid-South tag team champions the Wild Samoans (w/ General Skandor Akbar) versus Billy Ash & Ricky Ferrera
Highlights:
- OK, folks, Akbar left the broadcast table. We can take a little breather.
- Ash dropkicked Afa but fell victim to a standing choke.
- When Afa distracted referee Alfred Neely, Sika guillotined Ash with the top rope. SNEAKY!
- Sika tagged in, and the Samoans double-chopped Ash.
- As Sika slammed Ash, he followed with an elbow drop.
- Afa tagged in, gave Ash a cross corner whip, but came up empty on his follow-through.
- After Ferrera tagged in, he succumbed to a Samoan drop.
- 1-2-3.
- The Wild Samoans won at 2:24.
Rating: DUD
Summary: Showcase match for the new champs.
Match 2: “Mr. Wonderful” Paul Orndorff versus B. Brian Blair
Highlights:
- Blair hooked an O’Connor roll and got 2.
- As he attempted a sunset flip, Orndorff sat down for 2.
- He nailed Blair in the midsection, scored with a knee lift, and got another 2.
- When Orndorff gave him a cross corner whip, Blair successfully secured a sunset flip for 2.
- Both wrestlers spilled over the top rope to the concrete floor, but Orndorff quickly returned to the ring.
- After he mounted the second turnbuckle, Orndorff planted Blair with a flying knee.
- 1-2-3.
- Orndorff won at 6:29.
Rating: **
Summary: Blair’s coming along, but Orndorff is the real deal.
Match 3 for the NWA Louisiana title: Junkyard Dog (champion) versus Bob Roop
Highlights:
- JYD escaped a wrist lock by slamming Roop and powered out of a full nelson.
- When Roop relocked it, JYD hip-tossed him to escape.
- He dealt Roop a diving head butt, gave him a cross corner whip, and belted him in the midsection.
- As he blasted Roop, JYD got 2.
- Roop rebounded with a high knee, but JYD slammed him again.
- After Roop got his left leg tangled between the ropes, referees Neely and Jack Howe released him.
- During a commercial break, a decision occurred.
- With Roop on the concrete floor in agony, Orndorff arrived to assist him.
- Orndorff jumped onto the apron, so Roop held JYD at bay.
- Due to heel miscommunication, Orndorff inadvertently nailed Roop.
- JYD powerslammed Roop, yet Orndorff mounted the top turnbuckle.
- Catching Orndorff, JYD dropped him atop Roop.
- Orndorff got ejected to the concrete floor unable to further assist Roop.
- Storming the ring, Bob Orton mounted the top turnbuckle.
- Halting his efforts, JYD caught and sent him onto Orndorff on the concrete floor.
- The Shreveport faithful loved every minute of it, so JYD clobbered Roop with a forearm smash.
- 1-2-3.
- JYD retained at roughly 6:47.
Rating: ***
Summary: Despite all efforts by the heels, JYD triumphed and retained the belt.
Match 4: Ted DiBiase & Mr. Olympia versus Bob Orton & the “Polish Prince” Ed Wiskowski
Highlights:
- Frequent tags by the babyfaces led to DiBiase’s reversal of a cross corner whip.
- Although DiBiase didn’t fall for the float-over, Orton dealt him a knee lift.
- He landed a knee drop but ate a forearm shiver from DiBiase.
- As a distraction of referee Jack Howe by Wiskowski foiled Olympia’s tag, DiBiase spoiled a double-teaming by unloading a knee lift to Orton.
- He caught Wiskowski with an inside cradle and got 2.
- When Orton distracted Howe, Wiskowski attempted to suplex DiBiase.
- Instead, Olympia mounted the second turnbuckle and uncorked a missile dropkick. Wow!
- Nonetheless, momentum caused DiBiase to land atop Wiskowski for 1.
- With all four wrestlers in the ring, Olympia applied a sleeper to Wiskowski.
- Meanwhile, DiBiase and Orton battled further distracting Howe.
- Orton tried to piledrive him, but DiBiase countered with a back drop.
- Since Wiskowski was OUT COLD, DiBiase pinned him at 4:47.
Rating: **½
Summary: Normally referee distraction spawns heel chicanery. In this case, however, the distraction allows some babyface shenanigans providing them success.
Match 5: Frank Monte versus Ron Cheatum
Highlights:
- Time-filler here as Watts tried to maintain kayfabe by holding standby matches. At least main event matches finished on the same episode unlike WCCW.
- While Cheatum slammed Monte, the Shreveport faithful left in droves.
- Monte escaped another slam, trapped Cheatum with an O’Connor roll, and got 2.
- Scoring with a cross body block, Monte got another 2.
- He hooked an inside cradle but couldn’t get 3.
- And with that, the episode ended.
Rating: NONE
Conclusion: JYD’s victory highlights another stellar episode in the library. Combined with the DiBiase/Olympia versus Orton/Wiskowski and the Orndorff/Blair matches, this is another must-see chapter.
Next week, Dusty Rhodes and Dick Murdoch return to Mid-South!
TV Rating: NONE
