Will Perez survive against Madril? If so, can he survive against Kevin? Will Adias triumph over SBS? What happens when Steamboat and Thing collide? Is Kerry’s interview worthwhile?

Opening montage.

Match 1: Brian Adias (w/ Vince Apollo) versus Sweet Brown Sugar

Highlights:

  • At the bell, Adias attacked SBS and fed him a shot to the midsection.
  • He landed a knee drop and got 2.
  • When he suplexed SBS, Adias got another 2.
  • Adias gave him a cross corner whip, but SBS floated over him.
  • As he leaped to the opposite second turnbuckle, SBS scored with a flying fist.
  • SBS dealt him his own shot to the midsection, but Adias used momentum and the trunks to send him between the ropes to the floor.
  • After he guillotined SBS with the top rope, Adias dropkicked him for 2.
  • SBS rebounded with an inverted atomic drop, slammed Adias, and got 2.
  • While Adias gave him a cross corner whip, he attempted a Dim Chang, but his hand hadn’t completely healed yet.
  • SBS headbutted Adias, but Apollo jumped into the ring to nail him.
  • Handing Adias a foreign object, Apollo restrained SBS.
  • Kerry left the broadcast table and pounded on Adias culminating in a discus punch.
  • Due to all the chaos, referee Bronko Lubich called for the bell.
  • The match result was a double-DQ at 4:45.

Rating: **

Summary: More of an appetizer for the Thanksgiving spectacular as Kerry will battle Adias in his true return match.

Match 2: The Thing (w/ “Killer” Tim Brooks) versus Vic Steamboat

Highlights:

  • Returning from commercial break, Thing ambushed Steamboat before the bell.
  • The match quickly segued to the floor, and Thing made Steamboat HIT THE POLE.
  • As “Gentleman” Chris Adams replaced Kerry at the broadcast table, Thing headbutted referee John Keaton.
  • He rammed Steamboat face-first into the apron, and Brooks joined in double-teaming Steamboat.
  • Abruptly, an enraged Adams left the broadcast table to assist Steamboat.
  • He leveled Thing with a series of rights to ZERO effect.
  • When Thing headbutted him, Adams retaliated by making him HIT THE POLE.
  • Brooks hauled Thing away before Adams and Steamboat changed him from the new Thing to the forgotten Thing.
  • No match.

REAL Match 2 (non-title): WCWA World champion Al Perez (w/ Vince Apollo) versus Al Madril

Highlights:

  • Perez fed Madril a pair of shots to the midsection and landed a knee drop for 2.
  • As the Dallas faithful chanted “go, Al, go,” Perez belted their hero with a forearm shiver sending him to the floor.
  • Madril sauntered after Apollo, caught Perez sneaking up on him, and popped him.
  • When Perez scored with a shot to the midsection, Lowrance shilled the Thanksgiving Star Wars show at Reunion Arena on 11/26. Get your tickets NOW!
  • In the meantime, Perez bored the BEJEEZUS out of me with his relentless chin locks.
  • He hooked a rope-assisted stepover toe hold to return to my good graces.
  • After Madril kicked his way out of it, referee John Keaton became collateral damage. He’s taking an absolute shit-kicking this taping cycle.
  • Nevertheless, Perez dumped Madril over the top rope while Keaton was OUT COLD.
  • Keaton ultimately regained consciousness and called for the bell.
  • As a result, he ruled the match as a double-DQ at 10:57.
  • BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Rating: -*

Summary: Whoever told Perez to waste most of this match with boring chin locks should be sent to the guillotine.

After the match, Madril returns to the ring and dropkicks Perez. He gives Perez a cross corner whip and blasts him in the midsection. Where was this during the match?

Backstage, Lowrance interviews Kerry who cuts an incredibly passionate promo on Adias. Wow! I truly want to see this match!

Gary Hart holds the WCWA World title belt and offers a title shot to Mil Mascaras. In split-screen wearing a three-piece suit, Mascaras accepts the challenge. Following his promo, Hart touts Perez’s ability to wrestle all challengers. Mascaras finishes the promo en español.

POINT OF ORDER: The match between Perez and Mascaras occurred on November 24, 1987 in El Paso, TX.

Now we head to the Cotton Bowl!

From my Cotton Bowl ’87 review:

Match 5 for the WCWA World title: Al Perez (champion w/ Gary Hart & Brian Adias) versus Kevin Von Erich (w/ Fritz & Kerry Von Erich)

Highlights:

  • According to Lowrance, referee John Keaton mans the ring while Bronko Lubich mans the turf.
  • Joined in progress, the Cotton Bowl faithful feverishly clamored for “the claw.”
  • Kevin reversed a cross corner whip and sent Perez reeling across the ring.
  • When Kevin locked a standing leg scissors, he took Perez down for 1.
  • He rolled Perez over and got 2.
  • As he wheeled Perez in circles with his legs, Kevin got another 2.
  • Kevin attempted an Iron claw, but Perez ripped at the eyes to escape.
  • After Perez missed a knee drop, Kevin kicked him in the midsection.
  • Kevin mounted the top turnbuckle while the Von Erichs had a standoff against Hart and Adias on the turf.
  • While we missed Kevin’s move off the top turnbuckle, he only got 2 thanks to a foot on the bottom rope.
  • Fritz bullied Hart back into his seat, yet Kerry and Adias appeared ready to draw pistols at five paces.
  • Meanwhile, in the ring, Perez gave Kevin a cross corner whip but came up empty on his follow-through.
  • Kevin mounted the second turnbuckle and scored with a flying elbow smash.
  • Giving Perez a cross corner whip, Kevin backdropped him.
  • Perez ducked a right cross and backdropped Kevin over the top rope.
  • Do we have a new champion?
  • Keaton didn’t halt the match, so I guess the answer’s no as of right now.
  • Regardless, the match segued to the floor, and a brawl ensued.
  • Kevin ducked a right cross, so Perez inadvertently creamed Keaton.
  • Back in the ring, Kevin slammed Perez and applied an Iron claw.
  • Chaos erupted at ringside again as Fritz and Hart scrapped and Kerry flattened Adias with a discus punch.
  • Checking on his manager, Perez stuck his head through the ropes only to get KO’d by Kerry.
  • Kevin mounted the top turnbuckle and soared with a cross body block.
  • Subbing for Keaton, Lubich slid into the ring.
  • 1-2-3.
  • Kevin won at 9:49 shown.
  • WE HAVE A NEW CHAMPION!

Rating: ****

Summary: Too many shenanigans at ringside to rate any higher, but Kevin brought everything he had and gave it to Perez to score the victory and the title. But will it stand?

After the match, Kerry and Fritz enter the ring to congratulate Kevin while Hart, Adias, and especially Perez stand in disbelief.

Following all the hoopla, this disclaimer displays:

Conclusion: For the Sportatorium match, I’ll bet Perez was PISSED at the lackluster attendance, so he put the match in neutral.

For the Cotton Bowl match, obviously there were much more in attendance, so he and Kevin waged a war that might be the best match of 1987 in WCCW thus far. In other matches, Thing appears to be unhinged while Adias and SBS didn’t have enough time to showcase how good they are.

Also, a Bruiser Brody versus Iron Sheik match was mentioned but never materialized.

Next week, Adams gets a title shot against Perez! Can he regain the title he never lost?
