Who will win the rematch between Perez and Simpson? Can Borne and Atlas win in a six-man match? Who will be their partner? I’m not providing any spoilers.
The 6/20/1987 episode has gone AWOL; thus, we skip ahead a week. Unfortunately, the missing episode rears its ugly head later.
Opening montage.
Match 1: Sweet Brown Sugar versus Barry “Big Bear” Collie
Highlights:
- This match was joined in progress, and Collie fed SBS a backbreaker for 2.
- When he slammed SBS, Collie attempted a splash but ate knees.
- Collie gave him a cross corner whip, but SBS rebounded with a head butt.
- As he mounted the top turnbuckle, SBS scored with a flying splash.
- 1-2-3.
- SBS won at 1:07 shown.
Rating: ½*
Summary: Not much to rate, but SBS took down the big bear.
POINT OF ORDER: At this point, Jim Hellwig, otherwise known as Dingo Warrior, resigned from the WCWA. As far as I can tell, he didn’t relinquish the Texas title; although, an unlisted match in San Juan, Puerto Rico might have occurred on June 21 as Perez became the new champion. What actually happened was that Perez battled Tony Atlas in Austin on that night, so he was gifted the title.
Match 2 (non-title): WCWA Texas champion Al Perez (w/o Gary Hart) versus Steve Simpson
Highlights:
- According to Lowrance, the story behind Perez’s newly held title was described last week.
- WCCW chaplain Gary Holder joined the broadcast table for this match relieving Kerry.
- In an inset promo, Steve mentioned Perez’s chicanery in their match two weeks ago and detailed how prepared he’d be for this match. As you’d expect, he also wanted to win the Texas title.
- Shaun, Steve’s brother, was shown for the first time on camera.
- As Steve gave Perez a cross corner whip, he came up empty on his follow-through.
- Steve countered a slam with a backslide and got 2.
- When Lowrance noted that Perez won the Texas title “with the spinning toe hold,” Perez slammed Steve and followed with a knee drop for 2.
- Steve countered another slam attempt with an inside cradle for 2.
- After he gave Perez another cross corner whip, Steve fed him a monkey flip.
- He backdropped Perez but only got 1.
- While he hooked another backslide, Steve got 2.
- Steve attempted a cross body block, but Perez caught and dumped him over the top rope to the floor.
- As a result, referee Ralph Pulley called for the bell.
- Steve won by DQ at 5:45.
Rating: **
Summary: Not much settled between the two; therefore, I foresee subsequent battles. Don’t forget, had the title been on the line, Steve would have captured it.
FRITZ’S SCRAPBOOK: Fritz describes Brian Adias’ use of the Asian spike as footage of Adias versus Al Madril is shown. As he expresses his disapproval of Adias’ nefarious ways, Fritz worries that the Asian spike could lead to someone’s death.
Match 3: The Rock’n’Roll RPMs & Ted Arcidi (w/ Percy Pringle) versus “Maniac” Matt Borne, Tony Atlas, & the Spoiler
Highlights:
- In an inset promo, Borne replaced Pringle with Trash as his new manager. As you can guess, it’s an aluminum trash can. HA!
- Borne leapfrogged Arcidi and followed with a dropkick.
- When tags were exchanged on both sides, Atlas leapfrogged Lane twice and fed him a hip toss.
- Spoiler tagged in and backdropped Lane.
- As tags were exchanged on both sides again, it’s a battle of the big men.
- OK, maybe not like that.
- Nevertheless, Arcidi applied a full nelson, and the RPMs added some offense with shots to Atlas’ midsection.
- Spoiler interfered leading to Atlas’ escape and his own full nelson.
- After Arcidi made the ropes, Lane tagged in.
- Atlas reversed a cross corner whip and backdropped Lane.
- While Borne tagged in, he tidied up some house and slammed Lane.
- He mounted the top turnbuckle but missed the big elbow.
- Tagging in, Arcidi clotheslined Borne.
- He guillotined Borne with the top rope and slammed him.
- Landing an elbow drop, he tagged in Lane.
- Borne rebounded with a belly-to-belly suplex but got tripped by Pringle unbeknownst to referee Bronko Lubich. SNEAKY!
- Since Spoiler and Atlas alerted Lubich of the wrongdoing, Pringle blasted Borne with the cane. How dastardly!
- All six wrestlers in the ring, so Borne manhandled Pringle into the ring and introduced him to Trash.
- Seeing Borne WHACKING Pringle with a chain, Lubich called for the bell.
- The RPMs and Arcidi won by DQ at 10:25.
Rating: **
Summary: A bit disjointed, but the Dallas faithful ate up Pringle’s comeuppance.
After the match, Borne grabs the microphone and excites the Dallas faithful even more.
WCCW WRESTLER PROFILE OF THE WEEK: Madril described how he felt having received the Asian spike at the hands of Adias. A-ha! The missing footage from last week was shown where Madril collapsed. Evidently, WCWA turned what happened to Kevin into an angle. Nonetheless, Madril saw this as a wake-up call. Great segment!
Prior to the main event, Fulton grabs the microphone and announces that Rogers isn’t here yet due to the rainstorms. In lieu of a forfeit, he’ll accept the match 1-on-2.
Match 4 (non-title): WCWA World tag team champions the Fantastics versus “Flamboyant” Eric Embry & the “Thumper” Frankie Lancaster
Highlights:
- Prior to joining WCWA, Lancaster performed in Puerto Rico, All-Japan, Continental, and CWF. If his name sounds familiar, he did enhancement work for WCW later in his career.
- Fulton blocked a hip toss and fed Embry one of his own.
- As he reversed a cross corner whip, Fulton backdropped Embry and followed with a dropkick.
- Lancaster tagged in but ate a hip toss.
- When Embry interfered, Lancaster dealt Fulton a knee drop.
- He delivered a boot to the midsection and got 2.
- After Embry tagged in, he flattened Fulton with a lariat.
- He mounted the second turnbuckle and launched a diving head butt.
- Before Embry could make a cover, Rogers stormed into the ring still wearing street clothes.
- Rogers chaired a meeting of the minds between the heels, but referee Ralph Pulley called for the bell.
- Per Pulley, he ruled the bout a no-contest at 3:47.
- BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Rating: *
Summary: Quite the inauspicious debut for Lancaster as this was barely a match.
Following the match, all four wrestlers are in the ring, and a brawl ensues until the Fantastics clear the ring.
Conclusion: Without any Von Erichs available, the Fantastics were doing yeoman’s work handling the main event. The six-man tag was the true highlight of the episode with Borne getting his mitts on Pringle, a brief albeit necessarily so encounter between Atlas and Arcidi, and Spoiler filling in for the guy who quit.
Perez’s battle against Simpson introduced two things–Perez being the new Texas champion and Shaun Simpson.
Next week, Kevin returns from Japan and squares off against Len Denton.
TV Rating: NONE
