Match 1: Rock&Roll RPMs versus Steve Simpson & Sweet Brown Sugar

Highlights:

  • Davis slammed and gave SBS a cross corner whip.
  • When SBS floated over him, he scampered toward the opposite corner, leaped to the second turnbuckle, and uncorked a cross body block for 2.
  • Simpson tagged in, mounted the top turnbuckle, and lowered the boom onto Davis.
  • As Lane tagged in, he fed Simpson a belly-to-back suplex; however, Simpson maintained a head lock.
  • Davis tagged in and suplexed Simpson.
  • After Lane tagged in, Simpson leapfrogged and dealt him a cross body block for 1.
  • He dropkicked Lane before Davis tagged in to deliver a back elbow to him.
  • While Lane tagged in, he put a boot into Simpson’s midsection.
  • Davis tagged in, but Simpson hooked a sunset flip for 2.
  • Plugging the 4th annual David Von Erich Memorial Parade of Champions, Mercer noted the six female mud match with $10,000 in line for the winner.
  • Lane tagged in and landed a fist drop for 1.
  • Following a false tag, referee Ralph Pulley returned SBS to the babyface corner.
  • Meanwhile, the RPMs double-teamed Simpson in their corner. SNEAKY!
  • Lane missed an elbow drop, but Davis tagged in and prevented Simpson from tagging out.
  • Due to SBS’ distraction of Pulley, the RPMs illegally switched. Crafty!
  • Davis legally tagged in, missed a clothesline, and ate one himself. I’ll bet it didn’t taste like an Italian hoagie.
  • Hot tag SBS.
  • Dropkicking RPMs left and right, SBS hip-tossed Davis across the ring.
  • SBS attempted a flying headscissors, but Lane blasted him from the heel corner. How dastardly!
  • Since Pulley was preoccupied placing Simpson back into the babyface corner, he didn’t see the shenanigans.
  • 1-2-3.
  • RPMs won at 7:35.

Rating: **

Summary: As you may have noticed, there was a flurry of tags within the match that kept the action consistent. Speaking of consistent, the tag formula was followed quite well with a false tag along with some chicanery by the heels to obtain victory. Unfortunately, the Dallas faithful was only focused on Simpson.

Match 2: Mike Von Erich versus Mike Williams

Highlights:

  • As Mike secured what seemed like a never-ending side head lock, Mercer mentioned the 5th anniversary of WCCW including longtime wrestling director Keith Mitchell. Woohoo!
  • Mike hip-tossed and fed Williams an elbow drop for 2.
  • When Williams countered a side head lock with a belly-to-back suplex, Mike reversed a cross corner whip and monkey-flipped him.
  • He dropkicked Williams and launched a cross body block.
  • 1-2-3.
  • Mike won at 3:52.

Summary: Showcase match for Mike. Keep this match in mind in future reflections.

After the match, Brian Adias slithers into the ring to ambush Mike. Adias attempts to flatten Mike with a side-Russian leg sweep, but Mike blocks it by grabbing the top rope. He rips Adias’ polo shirt off him, but Adias rebounds by removing his belt. Whipping Mike, Adias tries to clothesline him. Mike ducks and dropkicks Adias. He locates the belt, but Adias hightails it before contact can be made.

Following a commercial break, Mercer interviews Spike Huber at ringside. For those unaware, Huber last wrestled in 1984 in the WWF. An interesting factoid about Huber was that he married Dick the Bruiser’s daughter Michelle. Regardless, Huber’s ready to join the ranks here in the WCWA.

Afterward, Mike joins Mercer and challenges Adias to a lumberjack country-whippin’ match at Texas Stadium. Although he struggles throughout the promo, he finishes it very strongly.

Match 3: Spike Huber versus Ken Fletcher

Highlights:

  • Huber hip-tossed Fletcher twice but ate one too.
  • When he rolled up Fletcher, Huber got 2.
  • Mercer mentioned that Mil Mascaras will encounter Al Madril at the spectacular.
  • As Huber hip-tossed Fletcher for a third time, Mercer also mentioned that Kevin will defend the World title against Antonio Inoki.
  • Mercer also mentioned that Red River Jack and Dingo Warrior will square off against Abdullah the Butcher and Eli the Eliminator.
  • After Huber slammed him, he hip-tossed Fletcher a fourth time and got 2.
  • He landed a leg drop and followed with a vertical suplex for another 2.
  • While Fletcher gave him a cross corner whip, Huber backdropped him.
  • He dropkicked Fletcher and hooked a belly-to-back suplex with a bridge.
  • 1-2-3.
  • Huber won at 7:43.

Rating: *

Summary: Showcase match for Huber that wasn’t terribly entertaining. If I had to compare Huber to anyone, it’d be David Sammartino.

“Feature” announced by Mercer was edited out by the folks at the WWE Network.

Match 4: Red River Jack & Lance Von Erich versus Nord the Barbarian & Eli the Eliminator (w/ Gary Hart & “Gentleman” Jim Holliday)

Highlights:

  • Jack fed Eli a cross body block and got 2.
  • As Lance tagged in, he mounted the top turnbuckle and lowered the boom onto Eli.
  • Lance evaded a pair of elbow drop attempts by Eli and dropkicked him.
  • When Nord tagged in, he gave Lance a cross corner whip but came up empty on his follow-through.
  • Jack tagged in, but Nord dealt him a big boot.
  • After Jack blasted Nord with a taste of his own medicine, Lance tagged in but got powerslammed for 2.
  • Eli tagged in and clotheslined Lance for 1.
  • While Nord tagged in, he hooked a belly-to-back suplex onto Lance.
  • Nord missed a leg drop, so Jack tagged in.
  • Giving Jack a cross corner whip, Nord ate boot on his follow-through.
  • Lance tagged in, but Nord took him down to the blue floor and made him HIT THE POLE.
  • In the meantime, Jack and Eli battled in the ring, and Holliday jumped both into the ring and onto Jack’s back.
  • Referee Rick Hazzard had seen enough and threw the match out at 6:44.

Summary: Chaotic main event, but there’s more chaos following the bell?

Following the match, Hart Pillmanizes Lance’s arm while Nord mounts the top turnbuckle. Right before Nord’s plan to mutilate Lance happens, Kevin saves his “cousin’s” bacon. Kevin battles with Nord and dropkicks him over the top rope to the blue floor. Returning to the ring, Jack manhandles Hart to clear the ring. Also keep this match in mind for future reflections.

Conclusion:  Along with the matches, Mercer helps to set the table for the upcoming spectacular. While the Jack-Hart feud continues so does the Lance-Nord saga. Also, the battle lines have been drawn between Mike and Adias. Sadly, Huber’s debut feels flatter than an armadillo on I-35.

Next week, the Fantastics will square off against Eric Embry & the Grappler.
